The legal back-and-forth between Nokia and Apple over patents, and who might be abusing them, continued Tuesday as Nokia lodged a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission.
In its complaint to the USITC, the Finnish company alleges that Apple infringes seven Nokia patents “in virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players, and computers.” Apple filed a counter suit earlier this month, charging Nokia with infringing 13 Apple patents related to the iPhone. “Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in small electronic devices”. “This action is about protecting the results of such pioneering development.”
Apple was not immediately available to comment on Nokia’s filing with the U.S. International Trade Commission. The USITC is an independent federal agency that looks at issues including unfair trade practices involving patent, trademark, and infringement. Research firm Strategy Analytics reported that Apple had surpassed Nokia in quarterly mobile phone profits, bringing in $1.6 billion from the iPhone, compared with Nokia’s $1.1 billion in cell phone profits.

Sony Ericsson is the latest phone maker to officially enter the Android arena. The manufacturer has unveiled the XPERIA X10 Android smartphone. Though it won’t come with Android 2.0, and just the version 1.6 Do nut. It is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, the X10 boasts a 4″ WVGA capacitive touchscreen display, an 8.1 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS with GSM/GPRS/EDGE in addition to either UMTS/HSPA. This will be dependent on where in the world you are and what networks will be releasing it.
The X10 will boast 1GB of onboard memory and Sony Ericsson will be kindly throwing in a 8GB microSD. Like the Motorola Cliq (or Dext) which launched with its own bit of customized Android face lift known as the MOTOBLUR, the X10 too has its own overlaying customized UI known as the Rachel. The Rachel UI will boast two Sony Ericsson apps known as Time scape and Media scape, more info in the press release below and as you will have imagined, a lot of Google pre-loaded apps. The XPERIA X10 will be available from Q1 2010 in Sensuous Black and Lustre White.

Android 1.6 phones get Google Maps Navigation

What was first unveiled exclusively on the Motorola Droid is now available to the rest of the Android gang. If you’ve got an Android phone running version 1.6, you’ll be able to download the new Google Maps Navigation application for free off the Android Market from today.
Android 1.6 phones in the US currently include the currently available T-Mobile my touch 3G, the G1 and the HTC Tattoo, as well as the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. However handsets like the HTC Hero, Droid Eris, Samsung Moment and the Samsung Behold II all run Android 1.5 so won’t be getting the new feature.
While you will get features like turn by turn voice guidance and automatic rerouting, some features of Android 2.0 are not available on Android 1.6, for example, the ability to use the “navigate to” voice command. Nevertheless, if you’re an Android user with the eligible phones mentioned above in the US, you’re definitely in luck and the likes of TomTom, Garmin will no doubt be banging their heads against the wall with this news. Nokia N900 hack turns the mobile tablet

Due to arrive in the New Year here in the UK via Vodafone, Nokia’s relatively new N900 Maemo mobile phone tablet gets turned into a controller for the PlayStation 3 game console. The hack in question is in fact a new application currently still being improved and is in its early stages. Its known as BlueMaemo Bluetooth emulator and allows the N900 to mimic bluetooth devices.
If you’re a Nokia fan and happen to have the PS3, this doesn’t look too complicated to setup which means this application could make your gaming experience even cooler.
Its developer Valério Domingos humbly points out that the purpose of connecting up to a PS3 is purely for menu navigation and easier text input, though we’ve no doubt a few hardcore Nokia loyalists will try using this in an action game to prove the N900’s superiority.
Unfortunately, the video is in Italian but you should still be able to make out most of what is happening during the entire process. Please note that BlueMaemo is still in the extras-devel repository, this means that theapplication is still in alpha and unstable and may hang/crash your device.

The Sony Ericsson X10, SE’s first Android phone shows in the video below that its not just the Motorola Droid / Milestone which will be able to take advantage of Google’s free turn by turn maps navigation application. The GPS / sat nav application by Google which first debuted earlier in October this year is increasingly becoming a threat to the likes of TomTom and CoPilot who have thrown themselves into the mobile app market.
We should expect to see a ton of upcoming Android phones including of course the upcoming, much anticipated Google Phone (Nexus One) to come with the application completely free of charge.
